It has been a while since the husband and I enjoyed a long weekend. I especially like it when the holiday falls on Monday, it makes me dread the end of my Sundays less. We were heading to Sunway Pyramid for lunch (a rather late one, it was nearer to tea time) when I suddenly remembered that one of our favourite Japanese restaurants have Sunday buffets available.
The restaurant is tucked to the side of the mall and is located on the first floor. The ambience is pretty casual and it can get busy during normal eating hours. Even on weekdays.
Since we were there rather late, it was quieter than the other times we came. I also like eating here because I can normally get a nice table by the side of the wide windows that let in a lot of natural daylight. Food just looks nicer when the light is right :-)
Another reason I like the buffets at Zen is that they serve the food fresh to your table, unlike the regular buffets where food have been sitting out in the open for a while. As we skipped most of breakfast and all of lunch, we were quite hungry when we got there. We proceeded to order quite a bit or should I say, quite a lot.
Unfortunately, the service that day was rather lacklustre. I think the kitchen mixed up our orders and there were two new servers who kept giving our food away to other tables. We had to wait quite a bit between each dish and towards the end, the orders that we thought they had forgotten suddenly appeared at our table.
You can imagine that we were already full by then. But we kept eating anyway because the food was still good.
The beef sukiyaki was my favourite. It was not too salty and the broth was light and flavourful. I have tried sukiyaki in many different eateries but they were always too thick for my liking. Yes, they make good sukiyaki at Zen’s.
We ended the meal with a single scoop of matcha ice cream. I am not a big fan but I do enjoy this bitter-sweet ice cream after a sumptuous Japanese course.

We would have savoured the experience more if they had not blundered with our orders so often. Today was unusual because they are generally satisfactory with their service.
As we were leaving the mall, I looked up and spotted a Cinnabon stall. Normally, I would not be bothered with the sweet, sticky cinnamon rolls however I intended to forego dinner (after a heavy and hearty spread) and thought it would be lovely to have them for supper.
Did I mention how much I love long weekends? And idle Sundays with good food are the best.
To all Malaysians, Happy Merdeka Day!
